About Me

Jessica Newell

Overview

A Short Intro

I'm a graphic designer still discovering my specialty, but I'm most drawn to branding, packaging, concept development, and visual storytelling. I enjoy design that takes time: the kind that requires research, creativity, and careful connections to become something original.

My work leans polished, conceptual, engaging, refined, and elegant. I'm especially interested in how brands can feel both thoughtful and memorable, whether through a packaging system, a printed object, or a visual identity built around a strong idea.

Background

How I Got Here

I was born and raised in Calgary, and I've loved art and creating for as long as I can remember. When I started looking for a career instead of just a job, I wanted something that could combine creativity with technical skill, structure, and problem solving, which led me to graphic design.

Before design school, I spent seven years as a gymnastics coach, with my final year including work as a program manager. I eventually moved to Vancouver for a hands-on, project-based design program taught by active industry professionals, and because I had always wanted to live close to the ocean.

Skills & Interests

What I Work With

My strongest skills are branding, packaging, and concept development, with a particular interest in the detail and precision behind print and physical design. I work mainly with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Lightroom), and I've also explored tools like Procreate, Figma, and Canva.

I also have some background in coding and built this website myself. My goal is to bring together my design education with my previous experience in coaching, management, communication, and detail-focused planning to become a thoughtful and reliable designer.

Fun Facts

Outside the Studio

Outside of design, I'm a big coffee fan and always enjoy trying new cafés, beans, and drinks, though an iced Americano is usually my favourite. I also love being near water, especially hearing the ocean, which is one of the reasons Vancouver felt like the right place to be.

In my free time, I enjoy reading both fiction and nonfiction, usually depending on my mood. I also have two cats who I adore, and they make working from home a lot more entertaining.
